Welding Technology
Do you like to build with your hands? The Welding Program at TSTC West Texas offers you the chance to do more than work with you hands. At TSTC you can become a craftsman in a high demand field -- you can become a Welder!
In the Welding Program, you'll learn how to read blueprints, how to lay out your materials, and how to fabricate metal products. Basically, you'll learn how to build what you want from scratch. In your courses you'll learn about
- Oxyacetylene cutting and welding
- Plasma arc cutting
- Shielded metal arc welding (stick welding)
- Gas metal arc welding (mig welding)
- Gas tungsten arc welding (tig welding)
- Dual shield flux cored arc welding
- Principles of fabrication
- Welding safety
- Blueprint reading
After you graduate, you'll find many career opportunities as a welder in businesses and industries like
- Aircraft parts and repair
- Construction
- Oil and gas (drilling rigs)
- Wind turbine repairs
- Pipeline
With your welding skills you can travel (pipeline welding or construction) or if you like heights, you might want to work on high rise buildings -- you'll have many choices of where to work. Perhaps you would like to open your own welding shop or for an established an established company like Barr Fabrication, Sivalls, Loadcraft, Rentech Boilers (Abilene), Peerless (Abilene), Smith Pipe and Zimmerman and Jansen (Houston). They are among the companies that have hired our graduates.
All employers conduct testing before they hire welders. We'll help you gain the general knowledge and hands-on training to prepare you to pass those tests. The kind of hands-on practice you receive in the Welding Program is key to good welding skills.
The TSTC West Texas Welding Program has its own large, well-equipped welding lab boasting 20 welding booths, 20 welding machines, a cutting area with a plasma cutting area, and an ironworker. The lab is set up for you to learn the skills you need to know to be a successful welder.
